Poor, the.

Made by God. Job 34:19¹⁹How much less to him that accepteth not the persons of princes, nor regardeth the rich more than the poor? for they all are the work of his hands. (Job 34:19). Pro. 22:2²The rich and poor meet together: the Lord is the maker of them all. (Proverbs 22:2).

Are such by God's appointment. 1 Sam. 2:7⁷The Lord maketh poor, and maketh rich: he bringeth low, and lifteth up. (1 Samuel 2:7). Job 1:21²¹And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord. (Job 1:21).

CONDITION OF, OFTEN RESULTS FROM Sloth. Prov. 20:13¹³Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread. (Proverbs 20:13).

Bad company. Prov. 28:19¹⁹He that tilleth his land shall have plenty of bread: but he that followeth after vain persons shall have poverty enough. (Proverbs 28:19). Drunkenness and gluttony. Prov. 23:21²¹For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags. (Proverbs 23:21).

GOD

Regards, equally with the rich. Job 34:19¹⁹How much less to him that accepteth not the persons of princes, nor regardeth the rich more than the poor? for they all are the work of his hands. (Job 34:19).

Forgets not. Psa. 9:18¹⁸For the needy shall not alway be forgotten: the expectation of the poor shall not perish for ever. (Psalm 9:18).

Hears. Psa. 69:33³³For the Lord heareth the poor, and despiseth not his prisoners. (Psalm 69:33). Isa. 41:17¹⁷When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue faileth for thirst, I the Lord will hear them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them. (Isaiah 41:17).

Maintains the right of. Psa. 140:12¹²I know that the Lord will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and the right of the poor. (Psalm 140:12).

Delivers. Job 36:15¹⁵He delivereth the poor in his affliction, and openeth their ears in oppression. (Job 36:15). Psa. 35:10¹⁰All my bones shall say, Lord, who is like unto thee, which deliverest the poor from him that is too strong for him, yea, the poor and the needy from him that spoileth him? (Psalm 35:10).

Protects. Psa. 12:5⁵For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now will I arise, saith the Lord; I will set him in safety from him that puffeth at him. (Psalm 12:5). Psa. 109:31³¹For he shall stand at the right hand of the poor, to save him from those that condemn his soul. (Psalm 109:31).

Exalts. 1 Sam. 2:8⁸He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the Lord's, and he hath set the world upon them. (1 Samuel 2:8). Psa. 107:41⁴¹Yet setteth he the poor on high from affliction, and maketh him families like a flock. (Psalm 107:41).

Provides for. Psa. 68:10¹⁰Thy congregation hath dwelt therein: thou, O God, hast prepared of thy goodness for the poor. (Psalm 68:10). Psa. 146:7⁷Which executeth judgment for the oppressed: which giveth food to the hungry. The Lord looseth the prisoners: (Psalm 146:7).

Despises not the prayer of. Psa. 102:17¹⁷He will regard the prayer of the destitute, and not despise their prayer. (Psalm 102:17).

Is the refuge of. Psa. 14:6⁶Ye have shamed the counsel of the poor, because the Lord is his refuge. (Psalm 14:6).

Shall never cease out of the land. Deut. 15:11¹¹For the poor shall never cease out of the land: therefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt open thine hand wide unto thy brother, to thy poor, and to thy needy, in thy land. (Deuteronomy 15:11). Zeph. 3:12¹²I will also leave in the midst of thee an afflicted and poor people, and they shall trust in the name of the Lord. (Zephaniah 3:12). Matt. 26:11¹¹For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always. (Matthew 26:11).

MAY BE

Rich in faith. James 2:5⁵Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him? (James 2:5).

Liberal. Mar. 12:42. 2 Cor. 9:2²For I know the forwardness of your mind, for which I boast of you to them of Macedonia, that Achaia was ready a year ago; and your zeal hath provoked very many. (2 Corinthians 9:2). Wise. Prov. 28:11¹¹The rich man is wise in his own conceit; but the poor that hath understanding searcheth him out. (Proverbs 28:11).

Upright. Prov. 19:1¹Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity, than he that is perverse in his lips, and is a fool. (Proverbs 19:1).

Christ lived as one of. Matt. 8:20²⁰And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head. (Matthew 8:20).

Christ preached to. Luke 4:18¹⁸The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, (Luke 4:18).

Christ delivers. Psa. 72:12¹²For he shall deliver the needy when he crieth; the poor also, and him that hath no helper. (Psalm 72:12).

Offerings of, acceptable to God. Mar. 12:42-44. 2 Cor. 8:2, 12²How that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality. (2 Corinthians 8:2)
¹²For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not. (2 Corinthians 8:12).

SHOULD

Rejoice in God. Isa. 29:19¹⁹The meek also shall increase their joy in the Lord, and the poor among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel. (Isaiah 29:19). Hope in God. Job 5:16¹⁶So the poor hath hope, and iniquity stoppeth her mouth. (Job 5:16).

Commit themselves to God. Psa. 10:14¹⁴Thou hast seen it; for thou beholdest mischief and spite, to requite it with thy hand: the poor committeth himself unto thee; thou art the helper of the fatherless. (Psalm 10:14).

When converted, rejoice in their exaltation. James 1:9⁹Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted: (James 1:9).

Provided for under the Law. Ex. 23:11¹¹But the seventh year thou shalt let it rest and lie still; that the poor of thy people may eat: and what they leave the beasts of the field shall eat. In like manner thou shalt deal with thy vineyard, and with thy oliveyard. (Exodus 23:11). Lev. 19:9, 10⁹And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not wholly reap the corners of thy field, neither shalt thou gather the gleanings of thy harvest. ¹⁰And thou shalt not glean thy vineyard, neither shalt thou gather every grape of thy vineyard; thou shalt leave them for the poor and stranger: I am the Lord your God. (Leviticus 19:9‑10).

NEGLECT TOWARDS, IS

A neglect of Christ. Matt. 25:42-45⁴²For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: ⁴³I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. ⁴⁴Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? ⁴⁵Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. (Matthew 25:42‑45).

Inconsistent with love to God. 1 John. 3:17.

A proof of unbelief. James 2:15-17¹⁵If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, ¹⁶And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? ¹⁷Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. (James 2:15‑17).

Rob not. Prov. 22:22²²Rob not the poor, because he is poor: neither oppress the afflicted in the gate: (Proverbs 22:22).

Wrong not in judgment. Ex. 23:6⁶Thou shalt not wrest the judgment of thy poor in his cause. (Exodus 23:6).

Take no usury from. Lev. 25:36³⁶Take thou no usury of him, or increase: but fear thy God; that thy brother may live with thee. (Leviticus 25:36).

Harden not the heart against. Deu. 15:7.

Shut not the hand against. Deu. 15:7.

Rule not, with rigor Lev. 25:39, 43³⁹And if thy brother that dwelleth by thee be waxen poor, and be sold unto thee; thou shalt not compel him to serve as a bondservant: (Leviticus 25:39)
⁴³Thou shalt not rule over him with rigor; but shalt fear thy God. (Leviticus 25:43).

Oppress not. Deu. 24:14. Zech. 7.10.

Despise not. Prov. 14:21²¹He that despiseth his neighbor sinneth: but he that hath mercy on the poor, happy is he. (Proverbs 14:21). James 2:2-4²For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment; ³And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool: ⁴Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts? (James 2:2‑4).

Relieve. Lev. 25.35. Matt. 19:21²¹Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. (Matthew 19:21).

Defend. Psa. 82:3, 4³Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy. ⁴Deliver the poor and needy: rid them out of the hand of the wicked. (Psalm 82:3‑4).

A CARE FOR

Is characteristic of saints. Psa. 112:9⁹He hath dispersed, he hath given to the poor; his righteousness endureth for ever; his horn shall be exalted with honor. (Psalm 112:9), with 2 Cor. 9:9⁹(As it is written, He hath dispersed abroad; he hath given to the poor: his righteousness remaineth for ever. (2 Corinthians 9:9). Prov. 29:7⁷The righteous considereth the cause of the poor: but the wicked regardeth not to know it. (Proverbs 29:7).

Is a fruit of repentance. Luke 3:11¹¹He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise. (Luke 3:11).

Should be urged. 2 Cor. 8:7, 8⁷Therefore, as ye abound in every thing, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this grace also. ⁸I speak not by commandment, but by occasion of the forwardness of others, and to prove the sincerity of your love. (2 Corinthians 8:7‑8). Gal. 2:10¹⁰Only they would that we should remember the poor; the same which I also was forward to do. (Galatians 2:10).

GIVE TO

Not grudgingly. Deut. 15:10¹⁰Thou shalt surely give him, and thine heart shall not be grieved when thou givest unto him: because that for this thing the Lord thy God shall bless thee in all thy works, and in all that thou puttest thine hand unto. (Deuteronomy 15:10). 2 Cor. 9:7⁷Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. (2 Corinthians 9:7).

Liberally. Deut. 14:29²⁹And the Levite, (because he hath no part nor inheritance with thee,) and the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, which are within thy gates, shall come, and shall eat and be satisfied; that the Lord thy God may bless thee in all the work of thine hand which thou doest. (Deuteronomy 14:29). Deut. 15:8, 11⁸But thou shalt open thine hand wide unto him, and shalt surely lend him sufficient for his need, in that which he wanteth. (Deuteronomy 15:8)

Without ostentation. Matt. 6:1¹Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. (Matthew 6:1).

Specially if saints. Rom. 12:13¹³Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality. (Romans 12:13). Gal. 6:10¹⁰As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith. (Galatians 6:10).

Pray for. Psa. 74:19, 21¹⁹O deliver not the soul of thy turtledove unto the multitude of the wicked: forget not the congregation of thy poor for ever. (Psalm 74:19)
²¹O let not the oppressed return ashamed: let the poor and needy praise thy name. (Psalm 74:21).

THEY WHO IN FAITH, BELIEVE,

Are happy. Prov. 14:21²¹He that despiseth his neighbor sinneth: but he that hath mercy on the poor, happy is he. (Proverbs 14:21).

Are blessed. Deut. 15:10¹⁰Thou shalt surely give him, and thine heart shall not be grieved when thou givest unto him: because that for this thing the Lord thy God shall bless thee in all thy works, and in all that thou puttest thine hand unto. (Deuteronomy 15:10). Psa. 41:1¹<<To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.>> Blessed is he that considereth the poor: the Lord will deliver him in time of trouble. (Psalm 41:1). Prov. 22:9⁹He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor. (Proverbs 22:9). Acts 20:35³⁵I have showed you all things, how that so laboring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive. (Acts 20:35).

Have the favor of God. Heb. 13:16¹⁶But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased. (Hebrews 13:16).

Have promises. Prov. 28:27²⁷He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack: but he that hideth his eyes shall have many a curse. (Proverbs 28:27). Luke 14:13, 14¹³But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind: ¹⁴And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just. (Luke 14:13‑14).

By oppressing, God is reproached. Prov. 14:31³¹He that oppresseth the poor reproacheth his Maker: but he that honoreth him hath mercy on the poor. (Proverbs 14:31).

By mocking, God is reproached. Prov. 17:5⁵Whoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker: and he that is glad at calamities shall not be unpunished. (Proverbs 17:5).

THE WICKED

Care not for. John 12:6⁶This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein. (John 12:6).

Oppress. Job 24:4-10⁴They turn the needy out of the way: the poor of the earth hide themselves together. ⁵Behold, as wild asses in the desert, go they forth to their work; rising betimes for a prey: the wilderness yieldeth food for them and for their children. ⁶They reap every one his corn in the field: and they gather the vintage of the wicked. ⁷They cause the naked to lodge without clothing, that they have no covering in the cold. ⁸They are wet with the showers of the mountains, and embrace the rock for want of a shelter. ⁹They pluck the fatherless from the breast, and take a pledge of the poor. ¹⁰They cause him to go naked without clothing, and they take away the sheaf from the hungry; (Job 24:4‑10). Ezek. 18:12¹²Hath oppressed the poor and needy, hath spoiled by violence, hath not restored the pledge, and hath lifted up his eyes to the idols, hath committed abomination, (Ezekiel 18:12). Vex. Ezek. 22:20²⁰As they gather silver, and brass, and iron, and lead, and tin, into the midst of the furnace, to blow the fire upon it, to melt it; so will I gather you in mine anger and in my fury, and I will leave you there, and melt you. (Ezekiel 22:20).

Regard not the cause of. Prov. 29:7⁷The righteous considereth the cause of the poor: but the wicked regardeth not to know it. (Proverbs 29:7).

Sell. Amos 2:6⁶Thus saith the Lord; For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they sold the righteous for silver, and the poor for a pair of shoes; (Amos 2:6).

Crush. Amos 4:1¹Hear this word, ye kine of Bashan, that are in the mountain of Samaria, which oppress the poor, which crush the needy, which say to their masters, Bring, and let us drink. (Amos 4:1).

Tread down. Amos 5:11¹¹Forasmuch therefore as your treading is upon the poor, and ye take from him burdens of wheat: ye have built houses of hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards, but ye shall not drink wine of them. (Amos 5:11).

Grind the faces of. Isa. 3:15¹⁵What mean ye that ye beat my people to pieces, and grind the faces of the poor? saith the Lord God of hosts. (Isaiah 3:15).

Devour. Hab. 3:14¹⁴Thou didst strike through with his staves the head of his villages: they came out as a whirlwind to scatter me: their rejoicing was as to devour the poor secretly. (Habakkuk 3:14).

Persecute. Psa. 10:2²The wicked in his pride doth persecute the poor: let them be taken in the devices that they have imagined. (Psalm 10:2).

Defraud. Amos 8:5, 6⁵Saying, When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell corn? and the sabbath, that we may set forth wheat, making the ephah small, and the shekel great, and falsifying the balances by deceit? ⁶That we may buy the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes; yea, and sell the refuse of the wheat? (Amos 8:5‑6).

Despise the counsel of. Psa. 14:6⁶Ye have shamed the counsel of the poor, because the Lord is his refuge. (Psalm 14:6).

Guilt of defrauding. James 5:4⁴Behold, the hire of the laborers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth. (James 5:4).

PUNISHMENT FOR

Oppressing. Prov. 22:16¹⁶He that oppresseth the poor to increase his riches, and he that giveth to the rich, shall surely come to want. (Proverbs 22:16). Ezek. 22:29, 31²⁹The people of the land have used oppression, and exercised robbery, and have vexed the poor and needy: yea, they have oppressed the stranger wrongfully. (Ezekiel 22:29)
³¹Therefore have I poured out mine indignation upon them; I have consumed them with the fire of my wrath: their own way have I recompensed upon their heads, saith the Lord God. (Ezekiel 22:31).

Spoiling. Isa. 3:13-15¹³The Lord standeth up to plead, and standeth to judge the people. ¹⁴The Lord will enter into judgment with the ancients of his people, and the princes thereof: for ye have eaten up the vineyard; the spoil of the poor is in your houses. ¹⁵What mean ye that ye beat my people to pieces, and grind the faces of the poor? saith the Lord God of hosts. (Isaiah 3:13‑15). Ezek. 18:13¹³Hath given forth upon usury, and hath taken increase: shall he then live? he shall not live: he hath done all these abominations; he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon him. (Ezekiel 18:13).

Refusing to assist. Job 22:7, 10⁷Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink, and thou hast withholden bread from the hungry. (Job 22:7)

Acting unjustly towards. Job 20:19, 29¹⁹Because he hath oppressed and hath forsaken the poor; because he hath violently taken away an house which he builded not; (Job 20:19)
