Made by God. Isa. 35:7⁷And the parched ground shall become a pool, and the thirsty land springs of water: in the habitation of dragons, where each lay, shall be grass with reeds and rushes. (Isaiah 35:7).

Made by man. Isa. 19:10¹⁰And they shall be broken in the purposes thereof, all that make sluices and ponds for fish. (Isaiah 19:10).

ARTIFICIAL, DESIGNED FOR

Supplying cities with water. 2 Kin. 20:20.

Supplying gardens, &c. with water. Ecc. 2:6.

Preserving fish. Isa. 19:10¹⁰And they shall be broken in the purposes thereof, all that make sluices and ponds for fish. (Isaiah 19:10).

Water of, brought into the city by a ditch or conduit. Isa. 22:11¹¹Ye made also a ditch between the two walls for the water of the old pool: but ye have not looked unto the maker thereof, neither had respect unto him that fashioned it long ago. (Isaiah 22:11), with 2 Kin. 20:20.

Filled by the rain. Psa. 84:6⁶Who passing through the valley of Baca make it a well; the rain also filleth the pools. (Psalm 84:6).

Bethesda. John 5:2²Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches. (John 5:2).

Gibeon. 2 Sam. 2:13¹³And Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out, and met together by the pool of Gibeon: and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool. (2 Samuel 2:13).

Hebron. 2 Sam. 4:12¹²And David commanded his young men, and they slew them, and cut off their hands and their feet, and hanged them up over the pool in Hebron. But they took the head of Ish-bosheth, and buried it in the sepulchre of Abner in Hebron. (2 Samuel 4:12).

Siloam. John 9:7⁷And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing. (John 9:7).

The upper pool. 2 Kin. 18:17. Isa. 7:3³Then said the Lord unto Isaiah, Go forth now to meet Ahaz, thou, and Shear-jashub thy son, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the fuller's field; (Isaiah 7:3).

The lower pool. Isa. 22:9⁹Ye have seen also the breaches of the city of David, that they are many: and ye gathered together the waters of the lower pool. (Isaiah 22:9).

The king's pool. Neh. 2:14¹⁴Then I went on to the gate of the fountain, and to the king's pool: but there was no place for the beast that was under me to pass. (Nehemiah 2:14).

The old pool. Isa. 22:11¹¹Ye made also a ditch between the two walls for the water of the old pool: but ye have not looked unto the maker thereof, neither had respect unto him that fashioned it long ago. (Isaiah 22:11).

The land of Egypt abounded in Ex. 7:19¹⁹And the Lord spake unto Moses, Say unto Aaron, Take thy rod, and stretch out thine hand upon the waters of Egypt, upon their streams, upon their rivers, and upon their ponds, and upon all their pools of water, that they may become blood; and that there may be blood throughout all the land of Egypt, both in vessels of wood, and in vessels of stone. (Exodus 7:19).

ILLUSTRATIVE

Of Nineveh. Nah. 2:8⁸But Nineveh is of old like a pool of water: yet they shall flee away. Stand, stand, shall they cry; but none shall look back. (Nahum 2:8).

(In the wilderness,) of the gifts of the Spirit. Isa. 35:7⁷And the parched ground shall become a pool, and the thirsty land springs of water: in the habitation of dragons, where each lay, shall be grass with reeds and rushes. (Isaiah 35:7). Isa. 41:18¹⁸I will open rivers in high places, and fountains in the midst of the valleys: I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry land springs of water. (Isaiah 41:18).

(Turning cities into,) of great desolation. Isa. 14:23²³I will also make it a possession for the bittern, and pools of water: and I will sweep it with the besom of destruction, saith the Lord of hosts. (Isaiah 14:23).
