I proclaimed a fast . . . that we might humble ourselves before our God, to seek from Him the right way.
Praying to God can be done in one of two ways. We can be like the self-righteous Pharisee in Luke’s Gospel who “prayed with himself” because he thought that he was better than others. Or we can be like Ezra in our verse who fasted and took a low place before God. Ezra’s prayer was answered.
