 Verse 34 is the tenor of the law, if not a particular law. The Apostle is peremptory about it in Timothy. "I suffer not a woman to teach," he says. I think it is a little out of place for a woman even to raise a hymn; but I do not object, if she do it modestly. (Notes on 1 Corinthians 14 by J.N. Darby)
 Women are forbidden to speak in the assemblies. It might have been supposed by those who love to reason that there if anywhere they might be allowed. (Notes on 1 Corinthians 14:26-40 by W. Kelly)

What can be more distinct and peremptory than this? The ingenuity of will, however, has found a supposed loophole. The word "speak," say they, means only to talk familiarly or to chatter. This is wholly untrue. It is the regular word for giving utterance, as may be seen in {vi 30458}{/vi}.
