Maschil of David. or, APsalm of David giving instruction.
A Prayer.David was twice in great peril in caves:
on one occasion, in the cave of Adullam, when he fled from Achish king of Gath; and on another, in the cave of Engedi, where he had taken refuge from the pursuit of Saul.
It is not certain to which of these events this Psalm refers; though probably to the former.when he was.
with my voice.
Book 5, Series 4. Gog attacks Israel. (“The Placement of the Psalms in Prophecy” by B. Anstey)
He cried unto Jehovah with his voice. This, as we have seen, is more than trusting Him. God is known in the revelation of Himself; so we look to the Lord and to a Father's love. But in crying with the voice there is confession of His name, and open acknowledgment of dependence and confiding in the Lord. The heart can open itself out before the Lord—not be careful, but make its requests known. It is a sure sign of confidence making our trouble known—a great thing to leave such with God.  (vv. 1-2) In the midst of his sorrows the godly man finds relief in spreading his trouble before the Lord. (Psalms 142 by H. Smith)
As their distress deepens the restored tribes of Israel continue to cry to the Lord. It is called a supplication (vs. 1-3). (Book 5. by B. Anstey)
