Mercy.

After the example of God. Luke 6:36³⁶Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful. (Luke 6:36).

Enjoined. 2 Kin. 6:21-23. Hos. 12:6⁶Therefore turn thou to thy God: keep mercy and judgment, and wait on thy God continually. (Hosea 12:6). Rom. 12:20, 21²⁰Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. ²¹Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good. (Romans 12:20‑21). Col. 3:12¹²Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; (Colossians 3:12).

To be engraved on the heart. Pro. 3:3³Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart: (Proverbs 3:3).

Characteristic of saints. Psa. 37:26²⁶He is ever merciful, and lendeth; and his seed is blessed. (Psalm 37:26). Isa. 57:1¹The righteous perisheth, and no man layeth it to heart: and merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil to come. (Isaiah 57:1).

SHOULD BE SHOWN

With cheerfulness. Rom. 12:8⁸Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that showeth mercy, with cheerfulness. (Romans 12:8).

To our brethren. Zech. 7:9⁹Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and show mercy and compassions every man to his brother: (Zechariah 7:9).

To those that are in distress. Luke 10:37³⁷And he said, He that showed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise. (Luke 10:37).

To the poor. Prov. 14:31³¹He that oppresseth the poor reproacheth his Maker: but he that honoreth him hath mercy on the poor. (Proverbs 14:31). Dan. 4:27²⁷Wherefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable unto thee, and break off thy sins by righteousness, and thine iniquities by showing mercy to the poor; if it may be a lengthening of thy tranquillity. (Daniel 4:27)

To backsliders. Luke 15:18-20¹⁸I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee, ¹⁹And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants. ²⁰And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. (Luke 15:18‑20). 2 Cor. 2:6-8⁶Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted of many. ⁷So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow. ⁸Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your love toward him. (2 Corinthians 2:6‑8).

To animals. Prov. 12:10¹⁰A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel. (Proverbs 12:10).

Upholds the throne of kings. Prov. 20:28²⁸Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy. (Proverbs 20:28).

Beneficial to those who exercise. Prov. 11:17¹⁷The merciful man doeth good to his own soul: but he that is cruel troubleth his own flesh. (Proverbs 11:17).

Blessedness of showing. Prov. 14:21²¹He that despiseth his neighbor sinneth: but he that hath mercy on the poor, happy is he. (Proverbs 14:21). Matt. 5:7⁷Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. (Matthew 5:7).

Hypocrites devoid of. Matt. 23:23²³Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. (Matthew 23:23).

Denunciations against those devoid of. Hos. 4:1, 3¹Hear the word of the Lord, ye children of Israel: for the Lord hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land. (Hosea 4:1)
³Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away. (Hosea 4:3) Mat. 18:23-35. James 2:13¹³For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath showed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment. (James 2:13).
