First mention of. Gen. 36:24²⁴And these are the children of Zibeon; both Ajah, and Anah: this was that Anah that found the mules in the wilderness, as he fed the asses of Zibeon his father. (Genesis 36:24).

Stupid and intractable. Psa. 32:9⁹Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding: whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, lest they come near unto thee. (Psalm 32:9).

USED FOR

Riding, by persons of distinction. 2 Sam. 13:29²⁹And the servants of Absalom did unto Amnon as Absalom had commanded. Then all the king's sons arose, and every man gat him up upon his mule, and fled. (2 Samuel 13:29). 2 Sam. 18:9⁹And Absalom met the servants of David. And Absalom rode upon a mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak, and his head caught hold of the oak, and he was taken up between the heaven and the earth; and the mule that was under him went away. (2 Samuel 18:9). 1 Kin. 1:33.

Carrying burdens. 2 Kin. 5:17. 1 Chron. 12:40⁴⁰Moreover they that were nigh them, even unto Issachar and Zebulun and Naphtali, brought bread on asses, and on camels, and on mules, and on oxen, and meat, meal, cakes of figs, and bunches of raisins, and wine, and oil, and oxen, and sheep abundantly: for there was joy in Israel. (1 Chronicles 12:40).

Conveying posts and messengers. Esther 8:10, 14¹⁰And he wrote in the king Ahasuerus' name, and sealed it with the king's ring, and sent letters by posts on horseback, and riders on mules, camels, and young dromedaries: (Esther 8:10)
¹⁴So the posts that rode upon mules and camels went out, being hastened and pressed on by the king's commandment. And the decree was given at Shushan the palace. (Esther 8:14).

Liable to the plague. Zech. 14:15¹⁵And so shall be the plague of the horse, of the mule, of the camel, and of the ass, and of all the beasts that shall be in these tents, as this plague. (Zechariah 14:15). Food of. 1 Kin. 4:28. (marg.) 1 Kin. 18:5.

THE JEWS

Forbidden to breed. Lev. 19:19¹⁹Ye shall keep my statutes. Thou shalt not let thy cattle gender with a diverse kind: thou shalt not sow thy field with mingled seed: neither shall a garment mingled of linen and woollen come upon thee. (Leviticus 19:19).

Brought many, from Babylon. Ezra 2:66⁶⁶Their horses were seven hundred thirty and six; their mules, two hundred forty and five; (Ezra 2:66).

Of Togarmah, sold in fairs of Tyre. Ezek. 27:14¹⁴They of the house of Togarmah traded in thy fairs with horses and horsemen and mules. (Ezekiel 27:14).

Often given as tribute. 1 Kin. 10:25.
