Antiquity of. Ex. 11:5⁵And all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sitteth upon his throne, even unto the firstborn of the maidservant that is behind the mill; and all the firstborn of beasts. (Exodus 11:5).

USED FOR GRINDING

Manna in the wilderness. Num. 11:8⁸And the people went about, and gathered it, and ground it in mills, or beat it in a mortar, and baked it in pans, and made cakes of it: and the taste of it was as the taste of fresh oil. (Numbers 11:8).

Corn. Isa. 47:2²Take the millstones, and grind meal: uncover thy locks, make bare the leg, uncover the thigh, pass over the rivers. (Isaiah 47:2).

Female servants usually employed at. (Exodus 11:5). Matt. 24:41⁴¹Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left. (Matthew 24:41).

Male captives often employed at. Judg. 16:21²¹But the Philistines took him, and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison house. (Judges 16:21). Lam. 5:13¹³They took the young men to grind, and the children fell under the wood. (Lamentations 5:13).

STONES USED IN

Hard. Job 41:24²⁴His heart is as firm as a stone; yea, as hard as a piece of the nether millstone. (Job 41:24).

Heavy. Matt. 18:6⁶But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea. (Matthew 18:6).

Large. Rev. 18:21²¹And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all. (Revelation 18:21).

Not to be taken in pledge. Deu, 24:6.

Often thrown down on enemies during sieges. Judg. 9:53⁵³And a certain woman cast a piece of a millstone upon Abimelech's head, and all to brake his skull. (Judges 9:53). 2 Sam, 11:21.

ILLUSTRATIVE

(Grinding at,) of degradation, &c. Isa. 47:1, 2¹Come down, and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon, sit on the ground: there is no throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called tender and delicate. ²Take the millstones, and grind meal: uncover thy locks, make bare the leg, uncover the thigh, pass over the rivers. (Isaiah 47:1‑2).

(Ceasing,) of desolation. Jer. 25:10¹⁰Moreover I will take from them the voice of mirth, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride, the sound of the millstones, and the light of the candle. (Jeremiah 25:10). Rev. 18:22²²And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft he be, shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee; (Revelation 18:22).
