Gold and silver used as. Gen. 13:2²And Abram was very rich in cattle, in silver, and in gold. (Genesis 13:2). Num. 22:18¹⁸And Balaam answered and said unto the servants of Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of the Lord my God, to do less or more. (Numbers 22:18).

Brass introduced as, by the Romans. Matt. 10:9⁹Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses, (Matthew 10:9).

Originally stamped with the image of a lamb. Gen. 23:15¹⁵My lord, hearken unto me: the land is worth four hundred shekels of silver; what is that betwixt me and thee? bury therefore thy dead. (Genesis 23:15), with Gen. 33:19¹⁹And he bought a parcel of a field, where he had spread his tent, at the hand of the children of Hamor, Shechem's father, for an hundred pieces of money. Of the Romans, stamped with the image of Cæsar. Matt. 22:20, 21²⁰And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? ²¹They say unto him, Caesar's. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's. (Matthew 22:20‑21).

Usually taken by weight. Gen. 23:16¹⁶And Abraham hearkened unto Ephron; and Abraham weighed to Ephron the silver, which he had named in the audience of the sons of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, current money with the merchant. (Genesis 23:16). Jer. 32:10¹⁰And I subscribed the evidence, and sealed it, and took witnesses, and weighed him the money in the balances. (Jeremiah 32:10).

Talent of gold. 1 Kin. 9:14. 2 Kin. 23:33.

Shekel of silver. Judg. 17:10¹⁰And Micah said unto him, Dwell with me, and be unto me a father and a priest, and I will give thee ten shekels of silver by the year, and a suit of apparel, and thy victuals. So the Levite went in. (Judges 17:10). 2 Kin. 15:20.

Half shekel or bekah. Ex. 30:15¹⁵The rich shall not give more, and the poor shall not give less than half a shekel, when they give an offering unto the Lord, to make an atonement for your souls. (Exodus 30:15).

Third of a shekel. Neh. 10:32³²Also we made ordinances for us, to charge ourselves yearly with the third part of a shekel for the service of the house of our God; (Nehemiah 10:32).

Fourth of a shekel. 1 Sam. 9:8⁸And the servant answered Saul again, and said, Behold, I have here at hand the fourth part of a shekel of silver: that will I give to the man of God, to tell us our way. (1 Samuel 9:8).

Gerah the twentieth of a shekel. Num. 3:47⁴⁷Thou shalt even take five shekels apiece by the poll, after the shekel of the sanctuary shalt thou take them: (the shekel is twenty gerahs:) (Numbers 3:47).

Pound. Luke 19:13¹³And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come. (Luke 19:13).

Penny. Matt. 20:2²And when he had agreed with the laborers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard. (Matthew 20:2). Mar. 6:37.

Farthing. Matt. 5:26²⁶Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing. (Matthew 5:26). Luke 12:6⁶Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God? (Luke 12:6).

Mite. Mar. 12:42. Luke 21:2²And he saw also a certain poor widow casting in thither two mites. (Luke 21:2).

Of the Jews regulated by the standard of the sanctuary. Lev. 5:15¹⁵If a soul commit a trespass, and sin through ignorance, in the holy things of the Lord; then he shall bring for his trespass unto the Lord a ram without blemish out of the flocks, with thy estimation by shekels of silver, after the shekel of the sanctuary, for a trespass offering: (Leviticus 5:15). Jews forbidden to take usury for. Lev. 25:37³⁷Thou shalt not give him thy money upon usury, nor lend him thy victuals for increase. (Leviticus 25:37).

Changing of, a trade. Matt. 21:12¹²And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves, (Matthew 21:12). John 2:15¹⁵And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables; (John 2:15).

WAS GIVEN

For lands. Gen. 23:9⁹That he may give me the cave of Machpelah, which he hath, which is in the end of his field; for as much money as it is worth he shall give it me for a possession of a buryingplace amongst you. (Genesis 23:9). Acts 4:37³⁷Having land, sold it, and brought the money, and laid it at the apostles' feet. (Acts 4:37).

For slaves. Gen. 37:28²⁸Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt. (Genesis 37:28). Ex. 21:21²¹Notwithstanding, if he continue a day or two, he shall not be punished: for he is his money. (Exodus 21:21).

For merchandise. Gen. 43:12¹²And take double money in your hand; and the money that was brought again in the mouth of your sacks, carry it again in your hand; peradventure it was an oversight: (Genesis 43:12). Deut. 2:6⁶Ye shall buy meat of them for money, that ye may eat; and ye shall also buy water of them for money, that ye may drink. (Deuteronomy 2:6).

For tribute. 2 Kin. 23:33. Matt. 22:19¹⁹Show me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny. (Matthew 22:19).

As wages. Ezra 3:7⁷They gave money also unto the masons, and to the carpenters; and meat, and drink, and oil, unto them of Zidon, and to them of Tyre, to bring cedar trees from Lebanon to the sea of Joppa, according to the grant that they had of Cyrus king of Persia. (Ezra 3:7). Matt. 20:2²And when he had agreed with the laborers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard. (Matthew 20:2). James 5:4⁴Behold, the hire of the laborers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth. As alms. 1 Sam. 2:36³⁶And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left in thine house shall come and crouch to him for a piece of silver and a morsel of bread, and shall say, Put me, I pray thee, into one of the priests' offices, that I may eat a piece of bread. (1 Samuel 2:36). Acts 3:3, 6³Who seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple asked an alms. (Acts 3:3)
⁶Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk. (Acts 3:6).

Custom of presenting a piece of. Job 42:11¹¹Then came there unto him all his brethren, and all his sisters, and all they that had been of his acquaintance before, and did eat bread with him in his house: and they bemoaned him, and comforted him over all the evil that the Lord had brought upon him: every man also gave him a piece of money, and every one an earring of gold. (Job 42:11).
