The elevated parts of the earth. Gen. 7:19, 20¹⁹And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills, that were under the whole heaven, were covered. ²⁰Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains were covered. (Genesis 7:19‑20).

GOD

Formed. Amos 4:13¹³For, lo, he that formeth the mountains, and createth the wind, and declareth unto man what is his thought, that maketh the morning darkness, and treadeth upon the high places of the earth, The Lord, The God of hosts, is his name. (Amos 4:13).

Set fast. Psa. 65:6⁶Which by his strength setteth fast the mountains; being girded with power: (Psalm 65:6).

Gives strength to. Psa. 95:4⁴In his hand are the deep places of the earth: the strength of the hills is his also. (Psalm 95:4).

Weighs, in a balance. Isa. 40:12¹²Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance? (Isaiah 40:12).

Waters, from His chambers. Psa. 104:13¹³He watereth the hills from his chambers: the earth is satisfied with the fruit of thy works. (Psalm 104:13).

Parches, with draft. Hag. 1:11¹¹And I called for a drought upon the land, and upon the mountains, and upon the corn, and upon the new wine, and upon the oil, and upon that which the ground bringeth forth, and upon men, and upon cattle, and upon all the labor of the hands. (Haggai 1:11).

Causes, to smoke. Psa. 104:32³²He looketh on the earth, and it trembleth: he toucheth the hills, and they smoke. (Psalm 104:32). Psa. 144:5⁵Bow thy heavens, O Lord, and come down: touch the mountains, and they shall smoke. (Psalm 144:5).

Sets the foundations of, on fire. Deut. 32:22²²For a fire is kindled in mine anger, and shall burn unto the lowest hell, and shall consume the earth with her increase, and set on fire the foundations of the mountains. (Deuteronomy 32:22).

Makes waste. Isa. 42:15¹⁵I will make waste mountains and hills, and dry up all their herbs; and I will make the rivers islands, and I will dry up the pools. (Isaiah 42:15).

Causes, to tremble. Nah. 1:5⁵The mountains quake at him, and the hills melt, and the earth is burned at his presence, yea, the world, and all that dwell therein. (Nahum 1:5). Hab. 3:10¹⁰The mountains saw thee, and they trembled: the overflowing of the water passed by: the deep uttered his voice, and lifted up his hands on high. (Habakkuk 3:10).

Causes, to skip. Psa. 114:4, 6⁴The mountains skipped like rams, and the little hills like lambs. (Psalm 114:4)

Causes, to melt. Judg. 5:5⁵The mountains melted from before the Lord, even that Sinai from before the Lord God of Israel. (Judges 5:5). Psa. 97:5⁵The hills melted like wax at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth. (Psalm 97:5). Isa. 64:1, 3¹Oh that thou wouldest rend the heavens, that thou wouldest come down, that the mountains might flow down at thy presence, (Isaiah 64:1)
³When thou didst terrible things which we looked not for, thou camest down, the mountains flowed down at thy presence. (Isaiah 64:3).

Removes. Job 9:5⁵Which removeth the mountains, and they know not: which overturneth them in his anger. (Job 9:5).

Made to glorify God. Psa. 148:9⁹Mountains, and all hills; fruitful trees, and all cedars: (Psalm 148:9).

CALLED

God's mountains. Isa. 49:11¹¹And I will make all my mountains a way, and my highways shall be exalted. (Isaiah 49:11).

The ancient mountains. Deu. 33:11

The everlasting mountains. Hab. 3:6⁶He stood, and measured the earth: he beheld, and drove asunder the nations; and the everlasting mountains were scattered, the perpetual hills did bow: his ways are everlasting. (Habakkuk 3:6).

Pillars of heaven. Job 26:11¹¹The pillars of heaven tremble and are astonished at his reproof. (Job 26:11).

Many exceeding high. Psa. 104:18¹⁸The high hills are a refuge for the wild goats; and the rocks for the conies. (Psalm 104:18). Isa. 2:14¹⁴And upon all the high mountains, and upon all the hills that are lifted up, (Isaiah 2:14).

Collect the vapors which ascend from the earth. Psa. 104:6, 8⁶Thou coveredst it with the deep as with a garment: the waters stood above the mountains. (Psalm 104:6)
⁸They go up by the mountains; they go down by the valleys unto the place which thou hast founded for them. (Psalm 104:8).

Are the sources of springs and rivers. Deut. 8:7⁷For the Lord thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths that spring out of valleys and hills; (Deuteronomy 8:7). Psa. 104:8-10⁸They go up by the mountains; they go down by the valleys unto the place which thou hast founded for them. ⁹Thou hast set a bound that they may not pass over; that they turn not again to cover the earth. ¹⁰He sendeth the springs into the valleys, which run among the hills. (Psalm 104:8‑10).

Canaan abounded in. Deut. 11:11¹¹But the land, whither ye go to possess it, is a land of hills and valleys, and drinketh water of the rain of heaven: (Deuteronomy 11:11).

Volcanic fires of, alluded to. Isa. 64:1, 2¹Oh that thou wouldest rend the heavens, that thou wouldest come down, that the mountains might flow down at thy presence, ²As when the melting fire burneth, the fire causeth the waters to boil, to make thy name known to thine adversaries, that the nations may tremble at thy presence! (Isaiah 64:1‑2). Jer. 51:25²⁵Behold, I am against thee, O destroying mountain, saith the Lord, which destroyest all the earth: and I will stretch out mine hand upon thee, and roll thee down from the rocks, and will make thee a burnt mountain. Pisgah, (part of Abarim). Num. 21:20²⁰And from Bamoth in the valley, that is in the country of Moab, to the top of Pisgah, which looketh toward Jeshimon. (Numbers 21:20). Deut. 34:1¹And Moses went up from the plains of Moab unto the mountain of Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, that is over against Jericho. Sinai. Ex. 19:2, 18, 20, 23²For they were departed from Rephidim, and were come to the desert of Sinai, and had pitched in the wilderness; and there Israel camped before the mount. (Exodus 19:2)

Afford refuge in time of danger. Gen. 14:10¹⁰And the vale of Siddim was full of slimepits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and fell there; and they that remained fled to the mountain. (Genesis 14:10). Judg. 6:2²And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel: and because of the Midianites the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and caves, and strong holds. (Judges 6:2). Matt. 24:16¹⁶Then let them which be in Judea flee into the mountains: (Matthew 24:16). Heb. 11:38³⁸(Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth. (Hebrews 11:38).

Afforded pasturage. ABOUNDED WITH

Herbs. Prov. 27:25²⁵The hay appeareth, and the tender grass showeth itself, and herbs of the mountains are gathered. (Proverbs 27:25).

Minerals. Deut. 8:9⁹A land wherein thou shalt eat bread without scarceness, thou shalt not lack any thing in it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills thou mayest dig brass. (Deuteronomy 8:9).

Precious things. Deut. 33:15¹⁵And for the chief things of the ancient mountains, and for the precious things of the lasting hills, (Deuteronomy 33:15).

Stone for building. 1 Kin. 5:14, 17. Dan. 2:45⁴⁵Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure. (Daniel 2:45).

Forests. 2 Kin. 19:23. 2 Chr. 2:2, 8-10²And Solomon told out threescore and ten thousand men to bear burdens, and fourscore thousand to hew in the mountain, and three thousand and six hundred to oversee them. (2 Chronicles 2:2)
⁸Send me also cedar trees, fir trees, and algum trees, out of Lebanon: for I know that thy servants can skill to cut timber in Lebanon; and, behold, my servants shall be with thy servants, ⁹Even to prepare me timber in abundance: for the house which I am about to build shall be wonderful great. ¹⁰And, behold, I will give to thy servants, the hewers that cut timber, twenty thousand measures of beaten wheat, and twenty thousand measures of barley, and twenty thousand baths of wine, and twenty thousand baths of oil. Vineyards. 2 Chr. 26:10¹⁰Also he built towers in the desert, and digged many wells: for he had much cattle, both in the low country, and in the plains: husbandmen also, and vine dressers in the mountains, and in Carmel: for he loved husbandry. (2 Chronicles 26:10). Jer. 31:5⁵Thou shalt yet plant vines upon the mountains of Samaria: the planters shall plant, and shall eat them as common things. (Jeremiah 31:5).

Spices. So. of Sol. 4:6⁶Until the day break, and the shadows flee away, I will get me to the mountain of myrrh, and to the hill of frankincense. (Song of Solomon 4:6). SoS. 8:14.

Deer. 1 Chron. 12:8⁸And of the Gadites there separated themselves unto David into the hold to the wilderness men of might, and men of war fit for the battle, that could handle shield and buckler, whose faces were like the faces of lions, and were as swift as the roes upon the mountains; (1 Chronicles 12:8). Game. 1 Sam. 26:20²⁰Now therefore, let not my blood fall to the earth before the face of the Lord: for the king of Israel is come out to seek a flea, as when one doth hunt a partridge in the mountains. (1 Samuel 26:20).

Wild beasts. SoS. 4:8. Hab. 2:17¹⁷For the violence of Lebanon shall cover thee, and the spoil of beasts, which made them afraid, because of men's blood, and for the violence of the land, of the city, and of all that dwell therein. (Habakkuk 2:17).

Often inhabited. Gen. 36:8⁸Thus dwelt Esau in mount Seir: Esau is Edom. (Genesis 36:8). Josh. 11:21²¹And at that time came Joshua, and cut off the Anakims from the mountains, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the mountains of Judah, and from all the mountains of Israel: Joshua destroyed them utterly with their cities. (Joshua 11:21).

Sometimes selected as places for divine worship. Gen. 22:2, 5²And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. (Genesis 22:2)
⁵And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you. (Genesis 22:5). Ex. 3:12¹²And he said, Certainly I will be with thee; and this shall be a token unto thee, that I have sent thee: When thou hast brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye shall serve God upon this mountain. (Exodus 3:12). Isa. 2:2²And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord's house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it. Often selected as places for idolatrous worship. Deut. 12:2²Ye shall utterly destroy all the places, wherein the nations which ye shall possess served their gods, upon the high mountains, and upon the hills, and under every green tree: (Deuteronomy 12:2). 2 Chr. 21:11¹¹Moreover he made high places in the mountains of Judah, and caused the inhabitants of Jerusalem to commit fornication, and compelled Judah thereto. (2 Chronicles 21:11).

Proclamations often made from. Isa. 40:9⁹O Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God! (Isaiah 40:9).

Beacons or ensigns often raised upon. Isa. 13:2²Lift ye up a banner upon the high mountain, exalt the voice unto them, shake the hand, that they may go into the gates of the nobles. (Isaiah 13:2). Isa. 30:17¹⁷One thousand shall flee at the rebuke of one; at the rebuke of five shall ye flee: till ye be left as a beacon upon the top of a mountain, and as an ensign on an hill. (Isaiah 30:17).

Of difficulties. Isa. 40:4⁴Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain: (Isaiah 40:4). Zech. 4:7⁷Who art thou, O great mountain? before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain: and he shall bring forth the headstone thereof with shoutings, crying, Grace, grace unto it. (Zechariah 4:7). Matt. 17:20²⁰And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. (Matthew 17:20).

Of persons in authority. Psa. 72:3³The mountains shall bring peace to the people, and the little hills, by righteousness. (Psalm 72:3). Isa. 44:23²³Sing, O ye heavens; for the Lord hath done it: shout, ye lower parts of the earth: break forth into singing, ye mountains, O forest, and every tree therein: for the Lord hath redeemed Jacob, and glorified himself in Israel. (Isaiah 44:23).

Of the church of God. Isa. 2:2²And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord's house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it. (Isaiah 2:2). Dan. 2:35, 44, 45³⁵Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshingfloors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them: and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth. ⁴⁴And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever. ⁴⁵Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure. (Daniel 2:44‑45).

Of God's righteousness. Psa. 36:6⁶Thy righteousness is like the great mountains; thy judgments are a great deep: O Lord, thou preservest man and beast. (Psalm 36:6).

Of proud and haughty persons. Isa. 2:14¹⁴And upon all the high mountains, and upon all the hills that are lifted up, (Isaiah 2:14).

(Burning,) of destructive enemies. Jer. 51:25²⁵Behold, I am against thee, O destroying mountain, saith the Lord, which destroyest all the earth: and I will stretch out mine hand upon thee, and roll thee down from the rocks, and will make thee a burnt mountain. (Jeremiah 51:25). Rev. 8:8⁸And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood; (Revelation 8:8).

(Breaking forth into singing,) of exceeding joy. Isa. 44:23²³Sing, O ye heavens; for the Lord hath done it: shout, ye lower parts of the earth: break forth into singing, ye mountains, O forest, and every tree therein: for the Lord hath redeemed Jacob, and glorified himself in Israel. (Isaiah 44:23). Isa. 55:12¹²For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands. (Isaiah 55:12).

(Threshing of,) of heavy judgments. Isa. 41:15¹⁵Behold, I will make thee a new sharp threshing instrument having teeth: thou shalt thresh the mountains, and beat them small, and shalt make the hills as chaff. (Isaiah 41:15).

(Made waste,) of desolation. Isa. 42:15¹⁵I will make waste mountains and hills, and dry up all their herbs; and I will make the rivers islands, and I will dry up the pools. (Isaiah 42:15). Mal. 1:3³And I hated Esau, and laid his mountains and his heritage waste for the dragons of the wilderness. (Malachi 1:3)

(Dropping new wine,) of abundance. Amos 9:13¹³Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that the plowman shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes him that soweth seed; and the mountains shall drop sweet wine, and all the hills shall melt. (Amos 9:13).
