Morning.

The second part of the day at the creation. Gen. 1:5, 8, 13, 19, 23, 31⁵And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day. (Genesis 1:5)
⁸And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day. (Genesis 1:8)
¹³And the evening and the morning were the third day. (Genesis 1:13)
¹⁹And the evening and the morning were the fourth day. (Genesis 1:19)
²³And the evening and the morning were the fifth day. (Genesis 1:23)
³¹And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day. (Genesis 1:31).

The first part of the natural day. Mar. 16:2.

Ordained by God. Job 38:12¹²Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days; and caused the dayspring to know his place; (Job 38:12).

Began with first dawn. Josh. 6:15¹⁵And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they rose early about the dawning of the day, and compassed the city after the same manner seven times: only on that day they compassed the city seven times. (Joshua 6:15). Psa. 119:147¹⁴⁷I prevented the dawning of the morning, and cried: I hoped in thy word. (Psalm 119:147).

Continued until noon. 1 Kin. 18:26. Neh. 8:3³And he read therein before the street that was before the water gate from the morning until midday, before the men and the women, and those that could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of the law. (Nehemiah 8:3).

First dawning of, called the eyelids of the morning. Job 3:9⁹Let the stars of the twilight thereof be dark; let it look for light, but have none; neither let it see the dawning of the day: (Job 3:9). (marg.) Job 41:18¹⁸By his neesings a light doth shine, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning. (Job 41:18).

The outgoings of, made to rejoice. Psa. 65:8⁸They also that dwell in the uttermost parts are afraid at thy tokens: thou makest the outgoings of the morning and evening to rejoice. (Psalm 65:8).

THE JEWS

Generally rose early in. Gen. 28:18¹⁸And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put for his pillows, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it. (Genesis 28:18). Judg. 6:28²⁸And when the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was cast down, and the grove was cut down that was by it, and the second bullock was offered upon the altar that was built. (Judges 6:28).

Eat but little in. Ecc. 10:16.

Went to the temple in. Luke 21:38³⁸And all the people came early in the morning to him in the temple, for to hear him. (Luke 21:38). John 8:2²And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them. (John 8:2).

Offered a part of the daily sacrifice in. Ex. 29:38,39³⁸Now this is that which thou shalt offer upon the altar; two lambs of the first year day by day continually. ³⁹The one lamb thou shalt offer in the morning; and the other lamb thou shalt offer at even: (Exodus 29:38‑39). Num. 28:4-7⁴The one lamb shalt thou offer in the morning, and the other lamb shalt thou offer at even; ⁵And a tenth part of an ephah of flour for a meat offering, mingled with the fourth part of an hin of beaten oil. ⁶It is a continual burnt offering, which was ordained in mount Sinai for a sweet savor, a sacrifice made by fire unto the Lord. ⁷And the drink offering thereof shall be the fourth part of an hin for the one lamb: in the holy place shalt thou cause the strong wine to be poured unto the Lord for a drink offering. (Numbers 28:4‑7).

Devoted a part of. to prayer and praise. Psa. 5:3³My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up. (Psalm 5:3). Psa. 59:16¹⁶But I will sing of thy power; yea, I will sing aloud of thy mercy in the morning: for thou hast been my defence and refuge in the day of my trouble. (Psalm 59:16). Psa. 88:13¹³But unto thee have I cried, O Lord; and in the morning shall my prayer prevent thee. (Psalm 88:13).

Gathered the manna in. Ex. 16:21²¹And they gathered it every morning, every man according to his eating: and when the sun waxed hot, it melted. (Exodus 16:21).

Began their journeys in. Gen. 22:3³And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him. (Genesis 22:3).

Held courts of justice in. Jer. 21:12¹²O house of David, thus saith the Lord; Execute judgment in the morning, and deliver him that is spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor, lest my fury go out like fire, and burn that none can quench it, because of the evil of your doings. (Jeremiah 21:12). Matt. 27:1¹When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death: (Matthew 27:1).

Contracted covenants in. Gen. 26:31³¹And they rose up betimes in the morning, and sware one to another: and Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace. (Genesis 26:31).

Transacted business in. Ecc. 11:6. Matt. 20:1¹For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire laborers into his vineyard. (Matthew 20:1).

Was frequently cloudless. 2 Sam. 23:4⁴And he shall be as the light of the morning, when the sun riseth, even a morning without clouds; as the tender grass springing out of the earth by clear shining after rain. (2 Samuel 23:4).

A red sky in, a sign of bad weather, Matt. 16.3.

Ushered in by the morning star. Job 38:7⁷When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? (Job 38:7).

ILLUSTRATIVE

Of the resurrection day. Psa. 49:14¹⁴Like sheep they are laid in the grave; death shall feed on them; and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their beauty shall consume in the grave from their dwelling. (Psalm 49:14).

(Breaking forth,) of the glory of the church. SoS. 6:10. Isa. 58:8⁸Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the Lord shall be thy rereward. (Isaiah 58:8).

(Star of,) of the glory of Christ Rev. 22:16¹⁶I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. (Revelation 22:16).

(Star of,) of reward of saints. Rev. 2:28²⁸And I will give him the morning star. (Revelation 2:28).

(Clouds in,) of the short-lived profession of hypocrites. Hos. 6:4⁴O Ephraim, what shall I do unto thee? O Judah, what shall I do unto thee? for your goodness is as a morning cloud, and as the early dew it goeth away. (Hosea 6:4).

(Wings of,) of rapid movements. Psa. 139:9⁹If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; (Psalm 139:9).

(Spread upon the mountains,) of heavy calamities. Joel 2:2²A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains: a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations. (Joel 2:2).
