Matt. 3:1‑17• 1{i}Now in those days comes John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea,{/i}
2{i}and saying, Repent, for the kingdom of the heavens has drawn nigh.{/i}
3{i}For this is he who has been spoken of through Esaias the prophet, saying, Voice of him that crieth in the wilderness: prepare ye the way of [the] Lord, make straight his paths.{/i}
4{i}And John himself had his garment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins, and his nourishment was locusts and wild honey.{/i}
5{i}Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judea, and all the country round the Jordan,{/i}
6{i}and were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.{/i}
7{i}But seeing many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, Offspring of vipers, who has forewarned you to flee from the coming wrath?{/i}
8{i}Produce therefore fruit worthy of repentance.{/i}
9{i}And do not think to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for [our] father; for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children to Abraham.{/i}
10{i}And already the axe is applied to the root of the trees; every tree therefore not producing good fruit is cut down and cast into the fire.{/i}
11{i}I indeed baptize you with water to repentance, but he that comes after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not fit to bear; he shall baptize you with [the] Holy Spirit and fire;{/i}
12{i}whose winnowing fan [is] in his hand, and he shall thoroughly purge his threshing-floor, and shall gather his wheat into the garner, but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.{/i}
13{i}Then comes Jesus from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized of him;{/i}
14{i}but John urgently forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee; and comest thou to me?{/i}
15{i}But Jesus answering said to him, Suffer [it] now; for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffers him.{/i}
16{i}And Jesus, having been baptized, went up straightway from the water, and lo, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon him:{/i}
17{i}and behold, a voice out of the heavens saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I have found my delight.{/i} (Matt. 3:1‑17)
Luke 3:1‑38• 1Now, in the fifteenth year of the government of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod Tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip Tetrarch of Ituræa and the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias Tetrarch of Abilene,
2in the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, {i}[the] word of God{/i} came upon John, the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness.
3{i}And he{/i} came into all the district round the Jordan, preaching [the] baptism of repentance for [the] remission of sins
4{i}as it is written in [the] book of [the] words of Esaias the prophet:{/i} Voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
5Every gorge shall be filled up, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low, and the crooked [places] shall become straight [paths], and the rough places smooth ways.
6And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.

11He answering says to them, He that has two coats let him give to him that has none; and he that has food let him do likewise.

13And he said to them, Take no more [money] than what is appointed to you.
14{i}And the soldiers also{/i} asked him, saying, And we, what should we do? And he said to them, Oppress no one, nor accuse falsely; and be content with your pay.
15{i}But as the people were in expectation, and all were reasoning in their hearts concerning John whether he might be the Christ,{/i}
16{i}John answered all, saying, I indeed baptize you with water, but the mightier than I is coming, the thong of whose sandals I am not fit to unloose; he shall baptize you with [the] Holy Spirit and fire;{/i}

21And it came to pass all the people having been baptized, and Jesus having been baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,
22and the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I have found my delight.

John 1:19‑36• 19And this is the witness of John when the Jews sent from Jerusalem priests and Levites that they might ask him, Who art thou?
20And he confessed, and denied not, and confessed, I am not the Christ.
21And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elijah? And he saith, I am not. Art thou the prophet? And he answered, No.
22They said therefore to him, Who art thou, that we may give an answer to those that sent us? What sayest thou of thyself?
23He said, I [am the] voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of Jehovah, as said Isaiah the prophet.
24And they were sent from among the Pharisees;
25and they asked him and said to him, Why then baptizest thou, if thou art not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?
26John answered them saying, I baptize with water: in the midst of you standeth, whom ye know not,
27he who cometh after me, of whom I am not worthy to unloose the thong of his sandal.
28These things took place in Bethany, across the Jordan where John was baptizing.
29On the morrow he seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold, the Lamb of God that taketh away the sin of the world!
30This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man who is become before me, for he was before me.
31And I knew him not, but that he might be manifested to Israel, therefore came I baptizing with water.
32And John bore witness, saying, I have beheld the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and it abode upon him.
33And I knew him not; but he that sent me to baptize with water, he said unto me, Upon whomsoever thou shalt see the Spirit descending and abiding on him, this is he that baptizeth with [the] Holy Spirit.
34And I have seen and borne witness that this is the Son of God.
35Again, on the morrow, stood John and two of his disciples;
36and, looking at Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold, the Lamb of God! (John 1:19‑36)
