Verse Ref.:
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

About This Product

Lewis discovered the man. The man discovered that eternal life is a gift. A classic gospel message. An incident from the life of L. S. Chafer.

Full Text of What Are You Going to Do About That?

One day, long ago, walking along a railroad bed, Lewis came to a road intersection and to a little building in which a railroad signalman was stationed, with a telegraph, a telephone and flags, for the safe and proper direction of rail and road traffic.

Looking in through the window, Lewis could see that the signalman was reading a large Bible. Lewis stepped into the signalman’s shanty and approvingly mentioned what he had seen.

“Oh,” the man replied, “I read that book a great deal.”

“So,” Lewis asked him, “are you saved?”

Thoughtfully, the signalman replied, “No, I am not.”

“Well,” replied Lewis kindly, “why aren’t you saved?”

“I never could be good enough to be saved,” the signalman responded.

“Friend,” said Lewis, “if God would make an exception in your case and give you salvation outright as a gift, would you receive it?”

Obviously stirred by this strange question, the signalman replied, “I do not know what brand of fool you think I am that I wouldn’t take a gift like that!”

“So,” Lewis said, “pick up that Bible and turn to John 10:28.” The signalman finally found the verse and read itthe words of the Lord Jesus Christ Himself:

“I give unto them eternal life, and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of My hand.”

Lewis followed up by saying, “Now take Romans 6:23.” The signalman read the following wonderful words:

“The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

Amazed, the signalman raised his eyes from the Bible to Lewis and said, “Stranger, I don’t know who you are, but you have done more for me today than any other man.”

“What have I done for you?” asked Lewis. “I’ve got you in a trap. You told me that if it was a gift, you’d accept it. Now, what are you going to do about that?”

“I will accept it,” the signalman exclaimed. And so he did, then and there.

Now, my friend, have you simply done what the signalman did? God offers you eternal life— as a free gift! Or have you despised and neglected this great gift— and despised and neglected God, His Son, and His love in so doing? Consider further what God has said:

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved. He that believeth on Him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God” (John 3:16-18).

“This is life eternal, that they might know Thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom Thou hast sent” (John 17:3).

Now, my friend, what are you going to do about that?
