Esos períodos están señalados en la Escritura con algún cambio en el modo de tratar Dios con la humanidad, o parte de ella, con respecto a las cuestiones de pecado y de responsabilidad humana. Cada una de estas dispensaciones puede ser considerada como una prueba del hombre natural, y cada una termina con el juicio que indica su fracaso completo.
Cinco de esas dispensaciones han tenido ya efecto; vivimos en la sexta, probablemente cerca de su fin; y tenemos en perspectiva la séptima y última: el milenio.
1. El hombre inocente
Esta dispensación se extiende desde la creación de Adán (Génesis 2:77And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. (Genesis 2:7)) hasta la expulsión. Adán, creado inocente, ignorante del bien y del mal, fue colocado en el jardín del Edén con Eva, su mujer, con orden de abstenerse del fruto del árbol de la ciencia del bien y del mal. La Dispensación de Inocencia dio por resultado la primera y —a sus efectos consiguientes— la más desastrosa caída del hombre natural. Su término fue el juicio, “echó, pues, fuera al hombre”.

2. El hombre bajo la conciencia
Con la caída adquirieron Adán y Eva el conocimiento del bien y del mal, legado suyo a la raza. Eso dio a la conciencia una base para el recto juicio moral, y, por consiguiente, la raza fue sometida a esta medida de responsabilidad: hacer el bien y evitar el mal. El resultado de la Dispensación de la Conciencia fue la corrupción de la tierra; y “la maldad de los hombres era mucha en la tierra, y que todo designio de los pensamientos del corazón de ellos era de continuo solamente el mal”. Y Dios puso fin a la segunda prueba del hombre natural con un juicio: el diluvio.

3. El hombre con autoridad sobre la tierra
Del juicio terrible del diluvio, Dios salvó a ocho personas; a las cuales, cuando se bajaron las aguas, dio la tierra purificada, con pleno poder para gobernarla. Eso correspondía a Noé y a sus descendientes. La Dispensación de Gobierno Humano resultó en el atentado impío de hacerse independiente de Dios en la vega de Sinar; su término fue el juicio de confusión de lenguas.

4. El hombre bajo la promesa
Dios llama a Abraham, uno de los descendientes dispersos de los constructores de Babel, y con él hace pacto. Algunas de las promesas hechas a Abraham y a sus descendientes eran puramente de gracia e incondicionales, y ya han sido, o serán aún, cumplidas literalmente. Otras promesas tenían por condición la fidelidad y obediencia de los israelitas. Cada una de esas condiciones fue violada, y la Dispensación de la Promesa trajo consigo la caída de Israel; y su fin fue el juicio de la opresión egipcia.
El libro de Génesis, que empieza con las sublimes palabras “En el principio creó Dios”, termina con “en un ataúd en Egipto”.

5. El hombre bajo la ley
De nuevo acudió la gracia de Dios al socorro del hombre desposeído, y redimió el pueblo escogido de la mano del opresor. En el desierto de Sinaí, Él les propuso el pacto de la ley. En lugar de rogar humildemente por una continuada relación de gracia, contestaron arrogantes: “Todo lo que Jehová ha dicho haremos”. La historia de Israel en el desierto y en la tierra es una larga serie de violaciones de la ley. Por fin, tras muchas amonestaciones, Dios cerró la prueba del hombre con la ley en el juicio; y primero Israel, y luego Judá, fueron expulsados de la tierra y su dispersión continúa. 6. El hombre bajo la gracia
El sacrificio que de Su vida hizo el Señor Jesucristo introdujo la Dispensación de Gracia, que significa favor inmerecido, Dios dando justicia en vez de exigirla, como bajo la ley.
Salvación, perfecta y eterna, es ahora ofrecida gratuitamente al judío y al gentil, siendo la fe condición única.
“Respondió Jesús y les dijo: Esta es la obra de Dios, que creáis en el que Él ha enviado” (Juan 6:2929Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. (John 6:29)).
“De cierto, de cierto os digo: El que cree en Mí, tiene vida eterna” (Juan 6:4747Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life. (John 6:47)).
“De cierto, de cierto os digo: El que oye Mi palabra, y cree al que Me envió, tiene vida eterna; y no vendrá a condenación, mas ha pasado de muerte a vida” (Juan 5:2424Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. (John 5:24)).
“Porque por gracia sois salvos por medio de la fe; y esto no de vosotros, pues es don de Dios; no por obras, para que nadie se gloríe” (Efesios 2:8-98For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9Not of works, lest any man should boast. (Ephesians 2:8‑9)).
El resultado predicho de esta prueba del hombre bajo la gracia es juicio sobre un mundo incrédulo y una iglesia apóstata.

7. El hombre bajo el reino personal de Cristo
Después de los juicios purificadores asociados con el regreso personal de Cristo a la tierra, Él reinará sobre Israel restaurado y sobre la tierra durante mil años. Ese es el período comúnmente llamado el milenio. El trono de Su poder será Jerusalén, y los santos, incluso los salvados en la Dispensación de Gracia, o sea la iglesia, participarán de Su gloria.

This is the first resurrection. 6Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years. Pero al ser suelto Satanás, halla el corazón natural tan inclinado al mal como de costumbre, y fácilmente reúne las naciones para pelear contra el Señor y Sus santos; y esta última dispensación concluye, como las otras, con juicio. El “gran trono blanco” es preparado, los muertos malos son levantados y finalmente juzgados, y luego vienen “un cielo nuevo, y una tierra nueva” —ha empezado la Eternidad.
