Long did I toil, and knew no earthly rest;
Far did I rove, and found no certain home;
At last I sought them in His sheltering breast,
Who opes His arms, and bids the weary come;
With Him I found a home, a rest divine,
And I since then am His, and He is mine.
The good I have is from His stores supplied;
The ill is only what He deems the best;
He for my friend, I'm rich with naught beside;
And poor without Him, though of all possessed.
Changes may come; I take, or I resign;
Content, while I am His, while He is mine.
While here, alas! I know but half His love,
But half discern Him, and but half adore;
But when I meet Him in the realms above,
I then will love Him better, praise Him more,
And feel, and tell, amid the choir divine,
How fully I am His, and He is mine.
Soon will the Master come: soon pass away
Our times of conflict, grief and suffering here;
Our night of weeping end in cloudless day,
And sorrow's moment like a dream appear;
Eternity—with Jesus—in the skies—
How soon that Sun of righteousness may rise!
We shall behold Him, whom not seen we love,
We shall be with Him, whom we long to see;
We shall be like Him, fit for realms above,
With Him, and like Him, for eternity!
Is now to sit at Jesus' feet our choice?
How will fruition then our souls rejoice!
Verses 1-3 by H. F. Lyte, verses 4-5 by J. G. Deck
Tune: “Finlandia” (Jan Sibelius, “Be Still My Soul”)
“They have gone from mountain to hill, they have forgotten their resting-place.” Jeremiah 50:6
“Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.” Matthew 11:28-29
“But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? Bid her therefore that she help me. And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:40-42
