A golden Psalm. This Psalm is supposed to have been called {al tashcheth,} or "destroy not," because David thus addressed one of his followers when about to kill Saul in the cave; and {michtam,} or "golden," because written, or worthy to be written, in gold.

• Between psalms 56 and 57 the first verse shows the difference: the former “for man would swallow me up;” the second, “for my soul trusteth in thee.” There he was trusting God's word, here he is looking for the accomplishment of it by the hand of God, and trusts under the shadow of His wings till the tyranny be overpast. • He trusts in the mercy of God, and finds his refuge and home in the tender loving care of God set forth, in figure, by “the shadow of thy wings.” (“Psalms 57” by H. Smith)

• The persecuted remnant having put their trust in God’s word (Ps. 56) turn to heaven for help. They realize that if deliverance is going to come it can only be from above. They look to God to send the Messiah for their deliverance (vs. 1-3). (“Book 2.” by B. Anstey)
