Excerpt: Rebekah Veiled Herself
There is an Old Testament type of bridal affections being stirred in Genesis 24. The subject in this chapter is Abraham (a type of God the Father) finding a wife for Isaac (a type of Christ). To accomplish this, Abraham sent out his servant, who is a type of the Holy Spirit. He was directed to Rebekah (a type of the church), and he promptly convinced her to go and be the wife of that man whom she had never seen. While on the journey to where Isaac lived, Rebekah asked the servant many questions about the man who was to be her husband—she wanted to know more about him! (vs. 65). This should be our interest as we wait for the grand meeting in the air. When the journey neared its end, Rebekah saw Isaac coming to meet her, and “she took a vail, and covered herself.” The realization of being united to him aroused bridal affections in her heart; she responded by wanting to reserve herself for him alone. The servant hadn’t told her to do this; it was a natural response in her when she saw Isaac coming. Note: This happened as a result of Rebekah “lifting up her eyes” (vs. 64). Oh brethren, are we lifting up our eyes and earnestly looking for Him at any moment? It will produce bridal affections in us, too!
