• We, who were once darkness, become light in the Lord. The apostle, no doubt, had vividly before him the never to be forgotten circumstances of his own conversion, suggestive of the light at mid-day, above the brightness of the sun shining from heaven. With this he brings in the allusion to Gen. 1:3, so as the better to contrast the light with the previous darkness, and connect all with the power, as well as the word, of God. • The shining forth of this gospel of the glory of Christ is the work of God’s power-of the same God who, by His word alone, caused the light instantaneously to shine out of the midst of darkness. (“2 Corinthians 4” by J.N. Darby)

• This great change had been brought about by the operation of God in the heart of the apostle, whereby the light of the glory of God in the face of Jesus had shone into his dark soul, even as by the Word of God the physical light had dispelled the darkness when God formed the earth for man.
