John 9:6‑11• 6Having said these things, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and spread the clay over his eyes,
7and said to him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, which is interpreted Sent. He went away therefore, and washed, and came seeing.
8The neighbours therefore, and those who used to see him before that he was a beggar, said, Is not this he that sitteth and beggeth?
9Some said, It is he; others said, No, but he is like him; but he said, It is I.
10They said therefore to him, How then were thine eyes opened?
11He answered, The man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said to me, Go unto Siloam, and wash. Having gone away then and washed I received sight.

1 John 2:20‑27• 20And ye have anointing from the Holy One, and know all things.
21I wrote not to you, because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.
22Who is the liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is the antichrist that denieth the Father and the Son.
23Every one that denieth the Son hath not the Father either; he that confesseth the Son hath the Father also.
24As for you, let what ye heard from [the] beginning abide in you: if what ye heard from the beginning abide in you, ye also shall abide in the Son and in the Father.
25And this is the promise which he promised us, life eternal.
26These things I wrote to you concerning those that lead you astray.
27And as for you, the anointing which ye received from him abideth in you, and ye have no need that anyone should teach you; but as the same anointing teacheth you, and is true, and is no lie, and even as it taught you, ye abide in him.

Gold is used as the symbol of intrinsic righteousness in God's nature, or divine righteousness; and white raiment or linen stands for the righteousnesses of saints, as we see from Revelation 19. Divine righteousness had slipped from their thoughts. They were neither appreciating the righteousness of God, which a Christian is made in Christ, nor the practical righteousness displayed before men, which the Spirit leads in.  Hearts are uncommonly naked in God's presence, unless Christ be their covering. (Lectures on Revelation: 3:14-22: Laodicea by W. Kelly)
