 The Lord attaches great importance to our owning Him as the One who has all power and authority in His own hands. The moment we recognise this it so much the more binds the conscience. If one knows a thing to be wrong, the conscience is held to it. One may not be able to see at once what is the right path to take; but to cease from what is evil is evidently the first step, and it is imperative. The imperfect tense. I translate "are," because "were" supposes they are no longer "about to die," which is contrary to the passage. Perhaps "have been" may be used. It refers to what they were found to be when he strengthened them. The point of departure of thought is not the writer's when writing, but the strengthener's when strengthening.
