(1) A disputed rendering; referred to a town and to the Messiah (Gen. 49:1010The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be. (Genesis 49:10); Isa. 9:66For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6)). (2) A city in Ephraim, midway between Bethel and Shechem. Now Sellun. Joshua’s capital and site where he apportioned his conquests. The ark remained there for three hundred years, till captured by the Philistines (Josh. 18:1,8-101And the whole congregation of the children of Israel assembled together at Shiloh, and set up the tabernacle of the congregation there. (Judges 21:19‑23)). Residence of Eli and Samuel (1 Sam. 3), and it was there that Eli received word of the capture of the ark, and died (1 Sam. 4). The ark was not returned to Shiloh after its capture, and the tabernacle was removed to Nob and thence to Jerusalem, but the odor of sanctity clung about the venerable city for generations, and it was long a place for annual pilgrimages and religious festivals. The prophet Ahijah dwelt at Shiloh (1 Kings 14:1-181At that time Abijah the son of Jeroboam fell sick. 2And Jeroboam said to his wife, Arise, I pray thee, and disguise thyself, that thou be not known to be the wife of Jeroboam; and get thee to Shiloh: behold, there is Ahijah the prophet, which told me that I should be king over this people. 3And take with thee ten loaves, and cracknels, and a cruse of honey, and go to him: he shall tell thee what shall become of the child. 4And Jeroboam's wife did so, and arose, and went to Shiloh, and came to the house of Ahijah. Jeremiah pictures Shiloh as desolate in his day (Jer. 7:12-14; 26:6-912But go ye now unto my place which was in Shiloh, where I set my name at the first, and see what I did to it for the wickedness of my people Israel. 13And now, because ye have done all these works, saith the Lord, and I spake unto you, rising up early and speaking, but ye heard not; and I called you, but ye answered not; 14Therefore will I do unto this house, which is called by my name, wherein ye trust, and unto the place which I gave to you and to your fathers, as I have done to Shiloh. (Jeremiah 7:12‑14)
6Then will I make this house like Shiloh, and will make this city a curse to all the nations of the earth. 7So the priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the Lord. 8Now it came to pass, when Jeremiah had made an end of speaking all that the Lord had commanded him to speak unto all the people, that the priests and the prophets and all the people took him, saying, Thou shalt surely die. 9Why hast thou prophesied in the name of the Lord, saying, This house shall be like Shiloh, and this city shall be desolate without an inhabitant? Ruins of Shiloh—Seilun
A place within the territory of Ephraim (which tribe had the first-born’s place), and where the tabernacle was located at the close of the life of Joshua (who was also of the tribe of Ephraim); Eli was priest there, and there Samuel began his ministry. The ark had been removed from Gilgal and remained at Shiloh until it was carried into the camp and captured by the Philistines. God had put His name there, but because of the wickedness of the Israelites He forsook the tabernacle at Shiloh, and the place was afterward held up as a sign of desolation. The break-down of the flesh, represented by Ephraim the firstborn, in the day of battle, made way for the election of God, who chose the tribe of Judah and Mount Zion (Psa. 78:9, 60-689The children of Ephraim, being armed, and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle. (Psalm 78:9)

When the sin of the tribe of Benjamin led to its being nearly destroyed (Judg. 20), the virgins of Shiloh were allowed to be seized to furnish wives for the survivors (Judg. 21).
