In verse 19 I think that the opening of the temple in heaven marks a new portion of the book, and that it is therefore connected, not so much with what went before, as with what follows (Lectures on Revelation 11:1-18 by W. Kelly)
The temple of God then is opened in heaven, and there was seen in it the ark of His covenant, the pledge of His faithfulness to His people. (Lectures on Revelation 12 by W. Kelly)
the ark of His covenant is seen, the sure pledge of mercy, and sign of faithfulness to His people. But still the circumstances were such as called for judgment; and accordingly "there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail,"* all of which were the tokens of God's judgment. a
The Revisers are right in separating verse 19, as indeed it is the introduction to the vision that follows, rather than the conclusion of chapter 11. It is amazing that the true relation of this verse escaped the notice of so many able Christian men, owing perhaps to the mere fact of its being unfortunately tacked to the end of chapter 11, instead of opening the new division commencing with chapter 12.
b
The true reading is probably "which is in heaven," I do not say that it is "the true reading." In 1860 I bracketed the article before "in" as doubtful; I should be disposed to do the same in 1871, even as later critics think on good authority, though the omission of the article in some of the best MSS. must make it doubtful.
c
Some MSS. read "his covenant," others "the covenant of the Lord."
d
"Testament" is all wrong, and everywhere except in {vi 30122-30123}{/vi}.
e
Some Edd. accept the reading "and an earthquake," others omit.
