 Here is a plain proof that they had heard a great deal about the truth. They thought themselves rich. (Lectures on Revelation: 3:14-22: Laodicea by W. Kelly)
 Absence of discernment follows. "And knowest not that thou art the wretched, and the miserable, and poor, and blind" (ver. 17). This was because they had rejected the testimony of God. His testimony always produces the sense of being nothing but it never weakens confidence in Him. (Lectures on Revelation: 3:14-22: Laodicea by W. Kelly)

There is good authority for repeating the article before "pitiable," which certainly gives marked emphasis; but the chief MSS. omit it making the construction regular, as in the RV. There is no doubt the KJV erroneously omits the article before "wretched.
