What Do You Need to Do to Be Lost?
NOTHING! If you haven’t believed on Christ, you are spiritually lost already!
What does the prisoner in the penitentiary do to be condemned? Nothing! Why? Because he is condemned already. He doesn’t need to commit another crime; he’s already been sentenced.
And you don’t need to add another sin to the long list recorded against you. No, not one. It’s all over with you.
Sentence — the verdict of God — has been issued, and you are pronounced “condemned already” (John 3:18). Terrible position!
Thank God, that sentence hasn’t been executed yet!
You are still where a pardon may reach you!
“BELIEVE on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house” (Acts 16:31) is the answer that Scripture gives. You may say, “Don’t I need to do something? Isn’t there a work I have to do, before I can be saved?” Scripture again answers, “This is the work of God, that ye believe on Him whom He hath sent” (John 6:29). And why does God constantly put it on the ground of believing? The reason is that there is nothing you could do to put away your sins or make you fit for the presence of a holy God.
There was only One competent to do this, the Lord Jesus Christ. He has done it. “He appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself ” (Hebrews 9:26).
Can you do anything in this work? You, a sinner? No! It was only the holy and eternal One that could do this, and it had to be accomplished by the SACRIFICE OF HIMSELF. His blood had to be shed.
You can still repent!
You are still where the blood of Christ can cleanse from all sin!
You are still an object of God’s grace, against which you have sinned!
“Thou hast destroyed thyself; but in Me is thine help.”
“Destroyed”! Yes, “lost,” and that according to the language of Scripture, for “if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost” (2 Corinthians 4:3).
A person is either saved or lost, and God recognizes no middle ground.
Awful condition! Lost! Though not in hell!
Lost! Though conscious of your guilt!
Lost! Though surrounded by mercy!
Lost! Though for years a professing Christian — baptized — a church member, perhaps more — yet lost!
“Today if ye will hear His voice, harden not your hearts” (Hebrews 4:7)!
Salvation is still available!
“Without shedding of blood is no remission” (Hebrews 9:22).
It’s a work that He has undertaken to do, on account of our ruined and sinful condition, as we are without strength, and “He is also able to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by Him” (Hebrews 7:25).
Again, “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me” (John 14:6).
Again, “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).
“Be it known unto you therefore … that through this Man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins, and by Him all that believe are justified from all things” (Acts 13:38‑39).
