19who having cast off all feeling, have given themselves up to lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greedy unsatisfied lust.
20But *ye* have not thus learnt the Christ,
21if ye have heard him and been instructed in him according as the truth is in Jesus;
22namely your having put off according to the former conversation the old man which corrupts itself according to the deceitful lusts;
(Eph. 4:17‑22)
;
Eph. 5:1‑11• 1Be ye therefore imitators of God, as beloved children,
2and walk in love, even as the Christ loved us, and delivered himself up for us, an offering and sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling savour.

4and filthiness and foolish talking, or jesting, which are not convenient; but rather thanksgiving.
5For this ye are well informed of, knowing that no fornicator, or unclean person, or person of unbridled lust, who is an idolater, has inheritance in the kingdom of the Christ and God.
6Let no one deceive you with vain words, for on account of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.
7Be not ye therefore fellow-partakers with them;
8for ye were once darkness, but now light in the Lord; walk as children of light,
9(for the fruit of the light is in all goodness and righteousness and truth,)
10proving what is agreeable to the Lord;
11and do not have fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather also reprove them,
(Eph. 5:1‑11)
;
Col. 3:5‑8• 5Put to death therefore your members which are upon the earth, fornication, uncleanness, vile passions, evil lust, and unbridled desire, which is idolatry.
6On account of which things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.
7In which *ye* also once walked when ye lived in these things.
8But now, put off, *ye* also, all these things, wrath, anger, malice, blasphemy, vile language out of your mouth.
(Col. 3:5‑8)
;
Titus 2:11‑14• 11For the grace of God which carries with it salvation for all men has appeared,
12teaching us that, having denied impiety and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, and justly, and piously in the present course of things,
13awaiting the blessed hope and appearing of the glory of our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ;
14who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all lawlessness, and purify to himself a peculiar people, zealous for good works.
(Titus 2:11‑14)
;
1 Peter 1:13‑19• 13Wherefore, having girded up the loins of your mind, be sober and hope with perfect stedfastness in the grace which will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;
14as children of obedience, not conformed to your former lusts in your ignorance;
15but as he who has called you is holy, be ye also holy in all your conversation;
16because it is written, Be ye holy, for *I* am holy.
17And if ye invoke as Father him who, without regard of persons, judges according to the work of each, pass your time of sojourn in fear,
18knowing that ye have been redeemed, not by corruptible things, as silver or gold, from your vain conversation handed down from your fathers,
19but by precious blood, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot, the blood of Christ,
(1 Peter 1:13‑19)
;
2 Peter 1:4‑10• 4through which he has given to us the greatest and precious promises, that through these ye may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
5But for this very reason also, using therewith all diligence, in your faith have also virtue, in virtue knowledge,
6in knowledge temperance, in temperance endurance, in endurance godliness,
7in godliness brotherly love, in brotherly love love:
8for these things existing and abounding in you make you to be neither idle nor unfruitful as regards the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ;
9for he with whom these things are not present is blind, short-sighted, and has forgotten the purging of his former sins.
10Wherefore the rather, brethren, use diligence to make your calling and election sure, for doing these things ye will never fall;
(2 Peter 1:4‑10)
;
2 Peter 3:14• 14Wherefore, beloved, as ye wait for these things, be diligent to be found of him in peace, without spot and blameless; (2 Peter 3:14)
;
1 John 3:7‑10• 7Children, let no man lead you astray; he that practises righteousness is righteous, even as *he* is righteous.
8He that practises sin is of the devil; for from the beginning the devil sins. To this end the Son of God has been manifested, that he might undo the works of the devil.
9Whoever has been begotten of God does not practise sin, because his seed abides in him, and he cannot sin, because he has been begotten of God.
10In this are manifest the children of God and the children of the devil. Whoever does not practise righteousness is not of God, and he who does not love his brother.
(1 John 3:7‑10)
 This was now the consolation that, if confusion reigned in the house of God, if vessels to dishonor had become mingled with the vessels to honor, the foundation, laid of God Himself, was immovable. (The Birth of Jesus by H.H. Snell)
 he who professed the name of the Lord was to depart from all iniquity. This was man’s responsibility, but it characterized the work and fruit of grace wherever that work was genuine and the true fruit borne. (2 Timothy 2 by J.N. Darby)
 The unity of the assembly is so precious, it has such authority over the heart of man, that there was danger, when failure had set in, lest the desire for outward unity should induce even the faithful to accept evil and walk in fellowship with it, rather than break this unity. (2 Timothy 2 by J.N. Darby)
 To maintain in practice the possibility of union between that name and evil is to blaspheme it. (2 Timothy 2 by J.N. Darby)
 The enemy may be permitted to wreck the public form of Christianity, and to turn its teachers into advocates of rationalistic or superstitious imaginations; but there still remains for faith this sure foundation of God, on which souls may repose, whatever the fury of the storm, in perfect peace. (article #86504)
 so widespread, had become so merged in the world and worldly things that it was impossible for the outward eye to distinguish the true saints of God. As in the days of Israel's apostasy under Ahab, Jehovah alone knew the seven thousand that had not bowed the knee to Baal, so now the Lord alone could with unerring certainty recognize His people amid the mass of professors that had crowded into the Church on earth. (article #86504)
 The Lord, on His side, knew, and knows, who are His; and His people, on their side, in the ruin in which they are found, are under the responsibility of departing from iniquity. (article #86504)

Yeta the firm foundation of God stands, having this seal, The Lord knows those that are his; and, Let every one who names the name of the Lord withdraw from iniquity.

The Greek word affirms with certainty where doubt may have been raised. This overthrowing might seem to call in question God's foundation. Yet that remains firm. Speculation as to what the foundation is is futile, particularly that of those who speak of the invisible church. The church is founded, a building; not a foundation. It is simply God's foundation abstractly.

W. Kelly Translation

The Alexandrian MS. has the strange error of "the foundation of God standeth to the firm." But that proposed rendering, like the English Bible which repeats its faultiness, offends against ordinary grammar. The position of the article proves that (stereos) "firm," cannot be a predicate, but is an epithet forming an integral part of the definition.
